Agriculture Department boost knowledge on the Capacity Building in Data Management and Data Processing provided through FAO regional training program.

FAO’s regional program GCP/MAG/095/EC, under the technical lead of FAO STAT SANOI program and technically supported by the FAO’s Agrifood Economics and Policy Division (ESA), seeks to continuously implement platforms on agriculture, food and nutrition security in the Indian Ocean which Seychelles has not been excluded.

From the 16th to the 23rd September, the Food Agriculture Organization of the UN, (FAO) Representative and Facilitator from the project team, Mr. Hasina Herimandimby, conducted a capacity building session of training at the Guy Morel Institute (TGMI), Majoie. The training comprised of sessions on data management and data processing using a system called (R). A software which meets the common data management and processing requirements for common processing tasks and workloads of the Agriculture Sector in the country. A total of 15 officers from the Agriculture Department and the Seychelles fishing Authority attended the training which found that it will be very useful as part of their daily duties.

Purpose of the training were to heighten the knowledge of the officers in data management and how to process data. To know the overall concepts and basics data processing for statistical analysis, the initial setup of the (R) software system. The officers will also be able to manipulate the capturing of data, data cleaning as well as descriptive statistics. How to visualize data by using (plotting, graphics, figures and maps) and use advance functions such as iteration. In addition, the training was a follow up on the previous Computer Assisted Personal Interviews (CAPI) training which was held in May 2024, at TGMI. The Agriculture Department extension services and the Census team will be initiating the testing phase during their upcoming survey. On the last day of the training session, Officers from the Department who participated in the CAPI training received their Certificate which was offered by the PS. Overall, the follow up on the data collection activities and training in the country, relates to the continuous technical support from the FAO Stat Sanoi program with its commitment to provide such formation to the Agriculture Department and other key stakeholders.
