Ministry launches enquiry on environmental impact of project on Assomption Island, Seychelles

The Ministry of Environment, Climate, Energy and Natural Resources has announced the launch of a special task force to review the environmental impact of the construction project on Assomption Island.

Speaking at a press conference, Minister Marie-May Jeremie stated that the task force will operate independently of the inquiry led by Judge Mathilda Twomey. She added that all relevant government agencies and entities will be involved in the review, and that the committee will also seek the support and advice from experts and non-governmental organisations.

In the meantime, Minister Jeremie confirmed that the partial prohibition currently in place will remain in force until the developers complies with the conditions that have been set. She noted that the developers have already committed to meeting some of these conditions, including the conduct of a biodiversity assessment and the implementation of an eradication plan for invasive species on Assomption Island.

Members of the local media were given the opportunity to ask questions regarding the composition of the task force, the implications of the prohibition on the project, and related issues.

Also present at the press conference were Dr Nimal Shah, Adviser to the President, and Mrs Nanette Laure, Principal Secretary for Environment. Articles covering the press conference are available online.
