Today, we mark a historic milestone as the world celebrates, for the first time, the International Day of Small Island Developing States (SIDS)—an initiative proudly pioneered by Seychelles and now recognised at the global level.
This day is an important opportunity to acknowledge the unique identity and shared realities of SIDS. Although we are spread across different regions of the world, we share many common characteristics—geographical remoteness, small economies, and a strong dependence on sectors such as tourism. At the same time, we remain highly vulnerable to climate change and global economic shocks.
Despite these challenges, SIDS are vibrant, resilient, and rich in culture. Our people embody strength, innovation, and a deep connection to the environment. We may be small in size, but we are united by a strong sense of purpose and determination.
The recognition of this day at the international level highlights the importance of SIDS on the global stage. It reinforces the need for stronger collaboration, solidarity, and collective action. By working together, we can ensure that our voices are heard and that our shared challenges are addressed effectively.
As we celebrate this day, let us reaffirm our commitment to sustainable development, environmental stewardship, and continued partnership—both within our islands and across the global community.
