The National Day Agricultural and Food Fair

Roche Caiman, Saturday 28 June 2025 – The National Day Agricultural and Food Fair was officially launched this weekend at the Roche Caiman sports complex, marking a vibrant celebration of Seychelles’ agricultural achievements and rich food culture. The two-day event was opened in the presence of President Wavel Ramkalawan, Vice President Ahmed Afif, members of the Cabinet of Ministers, local producers, development partners, and event organizers.

This special fair is not only a cornerstone of the country’s Independence Day celebrations marking 49 years of sovereignty, but also a unique opportunity to spotlight and market the diverse bounty that Seychelles, as a small island nation, can produce both on land and in the sea. To officially launch the event, the Minister for Agriculture, Climate Change and Environment, Mr. Flavien Joubert, addressed the gathered crowd with a call to action for both producers and consumers. He stated:

"The government will play its part by providing financial and technical solutions, and by building the necessary infrastructure to help this sector increase the capacity and standard of our producers. But we also need your commitment to fully realize the potential of these investments. And we need the commitment of our consumers to value the products that are grown and made right here in our country."

The Minister highlighted the significance of the fair as a platform for deeper engagement between the public and producers:

“This fair is an opportunity for us to connect more closely with our producers, to appreciate their methods, and to witness the variety of products Seychelles can offer. Most importantly, it’s a call to buy local. I encourage everyone to come down and support those working tirelessly to feed our nation. I hope no one leaves the fair empty-handed whether it’s with a plant, a small animal, or new knowledge that can help make a difference in your life and in the future of our country.”

The symbolic act of launching the fair was marked by two key traditions: the ringing of the bell, signifying the promotion of agricultural products from the land, and the sounding of the conch shell, representing food from the sea two pillars of Seychelles’ food security.

Over the weekend, fairgoers had the chance to explore exhibitions showcasing local produce, farming methods, livestock, fisheries products, and innovative food processing. Cooking demonstrations, educational booths, and interactive activities for children and families brought added energy to the celebration.

The National Day Agricultural and Food Fair not only reflects on how far Seychelles has come in nearly five decades of independence but also serves as a reminder of the journey ahead towards greater self-sufficiency, healthier diets, and a stronger connection to the land and sea that sustain the nation.
