The census is a collaborative effort supported by the SANOI Regional Project, and in collaboration with the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
The Agricultural Census serves as a fundamental source of information about agricultural production. Its purpose is to provide a benchmark on the structure of farm holdings and their main characteristics at the micro-level, thereby offering updated and reliable statistical information on farming activities. This information is essential for more efficient monitoring, planning, and policy-making.
The Agriculture Department just conducted a two-day training session for the Enumerators of the Agriculture Census 2024, to teach them how to use the new technology in field interviews with farmers, and also familiarize them with the census manual.
The training is an important component of the census process as it is crucial that all Census Filed Staff are equipped with the necessary skills to use the new technology to collect accurate and reliable information on the farms. The Agriculture Census staff will use tablets to capture and upload real-time agricultural data obtained from these farmers.
The farmers play a central role in achieving the country’s national food security targets. Therefore the Census will enable an efficient study of the farming communities, so that Government can assist farmers more effectively based on future plans and programs.
The Agriculture Census will be carried out by the Policy Planning Research and Monitoring & Evaluation Section of the Agriculture Department. It will cover all the 725 registered farms on Mahe, Praslin La Digue and Inner Islands, and will run from November 18 to December 13, 2024.
