Revitalizing Agricultural Education in Seychelles

Revitalizing Agricultural Education in Seychelles: Collaborative Strategies Discussed in Meeting with Mr. Vistah J. Mudenda and Minister Joubert

In a recent meeting with the Minister and Principal Secretary for Agriculture, Mr. Keven Nancy, Mr. Mudenda outlined a comprehensive plan aimed at revitalizing agricultural education in Seychelles.

Mr. Mudenda emphasized the need for enhancing the skills and teaching methodologies of agriculture secondary school teachers and lecturers at the Seychelles Institute of Agriculture and Horticulture (SIAH). This initiative is important for developing a robust educational framework that can effectively impart agricultural knowledge to students.

He also highlighted the development of a specialized agriculture curriculum for secondary schools, alongside the creation of local agricultural textbooks and instructional materials, was a significant point of discussion. This new curriculum will encompass various aspects of agricultural science, including crop and animal husbandry, and farm management.

Mr. Mudenda proposed the integration of digital technology into the agricultural curriculum. This approach aims to modernize agricultural education by incorporating contemporary digital tools and techniques, thereby making the learning process more interactive and effective.

The Minister acknowledged that digital technology would be instrumental in reaching a larger audience, including those in remote areas who require agricultural knowledge. This approach would democratize access to education and ensure that more people benefit from the advancements in agricultural teaching. The School Garden Project was identified as a pivotal initiative. The Minister suggested that schools could showcase their agricultural efforts through a School Garden Competition, organized to commemorate World Food Day on October 16, 2024. A committee comprising members from the Ministries of Education and Agriculture will oversee this competition, with prizes including textbooks and small hydroponic systems.

Furthermore, to foster international collaboration, Mr. Mudenda suggested establishing exchange and internship programs for agriculture teachers, lecturers, and students between Zambia and Seychelles. These programs will provide valuable exposure and practical experience, enhancing the overall quality of agricultural education.

Mr. Mudenda highlighted a significant gap in the current education system regarding agricultural studies. He pointed out that there is no existing foundation for agricultural education, which necessitates immediate intervention. He underscored the importance of integrating entrepreneurship and digital technology in agriculture, which can transform the sector and make it more appealing to the younger generation.

The meeting underscored the need to improve the mode of delivery for agricultural education. It was agreed that the new curriculum should be relevant not only to academic pursuits but also to practical agricultural practices. Additionally, Mr. Mudenda proposed the development of short courses tailored for practitioners, such as a course on pig production, to address specific industry needs.

The Minister expressed appreciation for the materials and books authored by Mr. Mudenda, which were showcased during the meeting. These resources can be adapted to the Seychelles context, enhancing the quality of agricultural education.

Discussions also covered Seychelles’ preparation for future participation in the WorldSkills Africa Competition, highlighting the need for robust agricultural training programs.

Mr. Mudenda’s visit and proposals mark a significant step towards enhancing agricultural education in Seychelles. The agreed initiatives, focusing on curriculum development, teacher training, digital integration, and practical applications, promise to transform the agricultural sector and equip the next generation with the skills and knowledge needed for sustainable development.

Present at the meeting were, Mr Jean Alcindor, Chair of SIAH Board and the Director General for Technical and Digital Education Division, Ms Marie Chantal Nicole, Senior Education Officer and Ms Tania Bellard Senior Education Officer, all from the Ministry of Education.
