Seychelles and UNECA Collaborate at COP28 to Foster Sustainable Development

In a pivotal sideline event at COP28, Seychelles’ Minister Joubert engaged in a bilateral meeting with Mr. Claver Gatete, the Executive Secretary of UNECA. The focus of their discussion centered on climate financing mechanism and how Seychelles can assist other Small Island States to implement effective marine spatial plan. Mr. Claver noted that Seychelles is poised to lead the way, inspiring and guiding fellow SIDS in a shared mission in building climate resilience.

Minister Joubert also expressed gratitude for UNECA’s decade-long support in areas such as Blue Economy and Sustainable Development. Special commendation was given for the Integrated Planning and Reporting Toolkit training, enhancing Seychelles’ capacities in monitoring progress towards Agenda 2063 and the 2030 SDGs. Mr. Gatete applauded Seychelles as a leader for launching the first blue bond and sharing the strategy with other nations. This collaborative spirit sets a precedent for international cooperation, fostering sustainability and resilience in the face of global challenges.

Senior Monitoring and Evaluation Officer from the Blue Economy Department, Ms. Gabriella Gonthier, and the Commonwealth National Climate Finance Advisor Mr. Aurelius Nkonde.

Dr. Sanjeev Pugazhendhi the Principal Policy Analyst from Seychelles’ Ministry of Health discussed the Small Island Developing states pooled procurement initiative, which will facilitate the procurement of medicines at cost effective rates.

Minister Joubert emphasized the need for infrastructure development to bolster the agricultural industry, acknowledging the vital role it plays in ensuring food security amidst changing climates. Mr. Claver highlighted that UNECA will recalibrate their structure and identify how they can further assist Seychelles to better manage and develop proper infrastructure to benefit the agricultural sector.
